No one knows exactly when floating markets first appeared, but they are known as places where hundreds or even thousands of boats of all sizes gather from different regions to trade goods, forming a unique river-based community economy.
The charm of floating market tourism lies in the fact that all trading activities take place on boats and small wooden vessels. In the past, people mainly used traditional boats such as “xuồng ba lá”, “xuồng năm lá”, and “ghe tam bản.” Today, there are also motorboats and larger trading boats. Visitors and local buyers alike travel to the market by boat to participate in this lively scene.
Cai Rang Floating Market is a unique type of market that represents the culture of the Mekong Delta, something rarely found anywhere else in Vietnam. It is also the most famous, bustling, and iconic floating market representing the river culture of Southern Vietnam.
Visiting Cai Rang Floating Market offers a one-of-a-kind experience: watching the poetic sunrise over the river, sitting on a small boat while immersing yourself in the lively trading atmosphere of the early morning market, and enjoying a hot bowl of Bún Riêu (Vietnamese crab noodle soup) right on the boat — truly an unforgettable experience.

Where Is Cai Rang Floating Market?
Cai Rang Floating Market is located on the Can Tho River, near 46 Hai Ba Trung Street, Ninh Kieu District (former), Can Tho City.
In 2016, Cai Rang Floating Market was officially recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Vietnam. The market was formed in the early 20th century, mainly serving as a trading hub for agricultural products, fruits, and specialties from the Mekong Delta.
History Of Cai Rang Floating Market
In the past, the market was once the largest rice trading hub in the Mekong Delta operated by the Chinese community. For travelers who enjoy cultural exploration and want to understand the river lifestyle of Southern Vietnam, Cai Rang Floating Market is truly an ideal destination.
Like many floating markets in the Mekong Delta, Cai Rang is located at a river junction (the meeting point of Cai Rang River and Hau River). This location has an ideal water depth, making it convenient for boats to anchor and move around. The area is also close to a land-based market and a large fruit wholesale hub.
Previously, Cai Rang Market mainly traded agricultural products, and each boat specialized in selling only one type of product. Today, however, the market has become more diverse, offering not only fruits and agricultural goods but also street food, household items, and daily necessities for river life.

When Is The Best Season To Visit Cai Rang Floating Market?
Can Tho has two distinct seasons:
-
Rainy season: May to November
-
Dry season: December to April
Visitors can explore the floating market in both seasons. However, if you love tropical fruits, the dry season (summer) is the best time to visit because this is when the Mekong Delta is full of fresh fruits.
What Is The Best Time Of Day To Visit The Floating Market?
Unlike land markets, Cai Rang Floating Market and other floating markets in the Mekong Delta start very early in the morning.
The ideal time to visit is between 4:00 AM and 5:00 AM.
At this time, hundreds of boats begin gathering at the market. Visitors will have the chance to experience the vibrant trading atmosphere and admire the beautiful sunrise over the river. Around 6:00 AM, you can also enjoy breakfast directly on the boat, which is one of the most authentic experiences of the trip.

Unique Trading Culture At The Floating Market
Cai Rang Floating Market sells a wide variety of goods. Each boat specializes in selling a particular product, ranging from fresh Mekong Delta fruits to daily household necessities.
Because the market is large and noisy with waves and engines, sellers cannot shout to advertise their products like in land markets. Instead, they hang their goods on a long pole called a “Bẹo” so buyers can easily recognize what is being sold from a distance.

There is also a special rule called “The Four Hanging Methods”:
Hang it to sell it:
If the seller hangs a product on the pole, it means they are selling that item (for example, hanging a watermelon means they are selling watermelons).
Hang but not for sale:
Clothes hanging on the pole usually belong to families living on the boats.
Not hanging but still selling:
Small boats weave through the market selling food and drinks such as noodle soup, coffee, and sandwiches.
Hang one thing but sell another:
If you see a roofing leaf hanging, it often means the boat itself is for sale (symbolizing the boat as their home).
Life On The River
Traders exchange goods from boat to boat by throwing, passing, or handing items across the water. By immersing yourself in the lively atmosphere of the market, you can observe the unique river lifestyle of local residents living on what can be considered “floating homes” equipped with TVs, kitchens, plants, and daily necessities.
